Located in the Strait of Malacca, off the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia, it is separated from the mainland by the Penang Strait. The island is home to nearly half of Penang's population; the state capital George Town, which covers the island and the five outlying islets, is Malaysia's third-largest city by population.
